Checklist: Which heat pump is right for you?

Geothermal heating, air-to-water heating, ground source heating or water source heating? Here is a quick checklist with all the pros and cons to help you choose.

Air-to-water heat pumps

The air-to-water heat pump has a unit on the outside that extracts energy from the outside air. The boiler itself is placed internally, so you need both an outdoor and an indoor unit in this case. However, you don't need to drill or dig.

+ No impact on the plot
+ No drilling needed
+ Lowest installation cost of all options
+ High efficiency, provides a lot of energy
+ Can be connected in series with other air-to-water heat pumps.

– Requires visible outdoor unit
– Provides a slightly lower output in northern Sweden

Ground source heat pump

A ground source heat pump is an earth-coupled heat pump that extracts energy from the ground.

+ Suitable for northern Sweden, but also works in large areas of southern Sweden
+ Less suitable on Gotland, for example, due to calcareous rock
+ Suitable for small plots
+ Little impact on the garden
+ High-efficiency pump, provides a lot of energy
+ Can provide cooling in the rooms in summer together with a fan convector
+ No visible outdoor unit needed

– Requires drilling
– Major investment in the short term
– Requires permission from the municipality

Geothermal heat pump

Geothermal heat pumps and water source heat pumps exist as variants of the ground source heat pump

+Suitable for large plots and agricultural properties
+ No drilling needed
+ Lower installation costs than ground source heating
+ High efficiency, provides a lot of energy
+ No visible outdoor unit needed

– Requires a lot of space to lay down the energy hose.
– Requires digging and restoration of the lawn, since the energy hose gets buried underground.

Water source heat pump

+ Suitable if you live close to a lake or watercourse
+ No drilling needed
+ Little or no impact on the garden
+ High-efficiency pump, provides a lot of energy
+ No visible outdoor unit needed

– Major investment in the short term
– Requires permission from the municipality
